Navigating change – no matter which side you’re on

Why?

I sit completely frozen, not moving a muscle, and keep my gaze fixed on a point just behind my boss, who’s sitting in front of me.

Inside, something completely different is happening. One millisecond I’m boiling with anger. The next, my stomach tightens into a hard knot and I’m on the verge of tears. The question "Why?" spins over and over in my head – first in disbelief, then in disappointment... and finally in some form of relief.

Time both stands still and rushes forward at a maddening pace.

On the outside, I’m calm and composed. Inside, it’s chaos.

I’m in the middle of a change. One I didn’t choose. One that scares me here and now.

I’ve just been told that I won’t be continuing in my role or at the company where I work.

💭 What happens now?

I’ve also sat on the other side of the table.

Where I’ve been the boss myself, having to deliver the news that changes everything.

Where I’ve kept calm on the outside – but on the inside…

💭 How can I best support her?
💭 What should I say to him to help?
💭 Breath...

Wanting to be as considerate as possible – and at the same time feeling like a complete jerk.
Knowing that my words right now are landing heavily and changing their (or his/her) reality.

Even when I’ve been part of influencing the change, the feeling can be hard to handle.

What perspective do I need?

Similar situations, different perspectives.

When I’m in the midst of a change, when uncertainty creeps in and I don’t know what to do – I try to remind myself of this:

💡 What perspective do I have right now?
💡 What perspective do I need?

Is it the perspective from:
🔹 A dear friend?
🔹 An experienced entrepreneur?
🔹 A former colleague?
🔹 The future me?

Who can help me focus on what I can actually influence, so I can move forward in this change? What would that person say to me if they were here right now?
